वाल्मीकि रामायणम् - पारायाणम् (Valimiki Ramayana - Daily Reading)

On Ramanavami  (21-April-2021) as part of Samskrita Bharati's gruhe gruhe ramayanam, I started to read two sargas of Ramayananam every day. There is a group of 600+ people organized on telegram app who have signed up. I will share interesting tidbits through this blog.

Today (7/11) - Ayodhya Khanda - 89-90-91 Sarga

Bharadwaja extends elaborate hospitality to Bharata and his entourage -- Invokes Visvakarma to make necessary arrangements. This reminded me of Vasista muni invoking Kamadhenu to feed Kaushika's army. I had never heard of this episode. Interesting to see that the army was fed with every possible food dishes including mutton, pork, chicken and peacock meat. Also, unlimited liquor. At the end the solders will say - "Let's forget Rama and going back to Ayodhya and stay here" :-)

In Sargas 89 and 90 - Both Guha and Bharadwaja ask Bharata - "Why have you brought army? what ill-intention do you have?" - poor Bharata's reputation has been destroyed due to Kaikeyee.

Today 8/12

After hearing to Maricha's advice Ravana will go back to Lanka abandoning his plan of Sita's abduction.

एवमुक्तो दशग्रीवो मारीचेन स रावणः।

न्यवर्तत पुरीं लङ्कां विवेश च गृहोत्तमम्।।3.31.50।।

Today 8/13

Shurpanakha lies to Ravana that she was trying to get Sita for him but Lakshmana disfigured her

तां तु विस्तीर्णजघनां पीनश्रोणिपयोधराम्।

भार्यार्थे च तवानेतुमुद्यताहं वराननाम्।।3.34.20।।

विरूपितास्मि क्रूरेण लक्ष्मणेन महाभुज।

Today 8/14

Ravana lies (or was not informed) that Rama was sent to forest due to his father's anger. He continues to abuse Rama

पित्रा निरस्तः क्रुद्धेन सभार्यः क्षीणजीवितः।

स हन्ता तस्य सैन्यस्य रामः क्षत्रियपांसनः।।3.36.10।।

दुश्शीलः कर्कशस्तीक्ष्णो मूर्खो लुब्धोऽजितेन्द्रियः।।3.36.11।।

त्यक्तधर्मो ह्यधर्मात्मा भूतानामहिते रतः।

Today 8/15

Maaricha will set the record straight on Rama. He says ravana has been ill-informed

न रामः कर्कशस्तात नाविद्वान्नाजितेन्द्रियः।

अनृतं दुश्श्रुतं चैव नैव त्वं वक्तुमर्हसि।।3.37.12।।

Today 8/19

Lakshmana predicts that this deer is maya deer and it is none other than Maaricha. Seeta uses harsh words on Lakshmana. There is a lot to learn here 1/ How emotions play with women 2/ How logic does not work at that time. Lakshmana predicts that Seeta will not be there when he comes back with Rama

Today 8/21

SeetaapaharaNam

Seeta says - fruits of paapa (bad deeds) will come after some time like the crops that ripe after some time.

ननु सद्योऽविनीतस्य दृश्यते कर्मणःफलम्।।3.49.27।।

कालोऽप्यङ्गीभवत्यत्र सस्यानामिव पक्तये।

Today 8/24

Ravana falls at seeta's feet asking her to please him:

एतौ पादौ मया स्निग्धौ शिरोभिः परिपीडितौ।।3.55.35।।

प्रसादं कुरु मे क्षिप्र वश्यो दासोऽहमस्मिते।

Seeta does not care if any harm is done to her body

इदं शरीरं निस्संज्ञं बन्ध वा खातयस्व वा।

नेदं शरीरं रक्षयं मे जीवितं वापि राक्षस।।3.56.21।।

न तु शक्ष्याम्युपक्रोशं पृथिव्यां दातुमात्मनः।

O demon this body has (now) no consciousness. You may bind it or bury it. I do not think that this body or even this life need to be protected. But at no cost can I make this an object of censure on earth (must not be branded an unchaste woman).

Today 8/25

Rama comes running back after killing Maaricha. He sees many bad omens 1/ jackal howling 2/ left eye twitching etc,

अशुभं बत मन्येऽहं गोमायुर्वाश्यते यथा।   <---- jackal howling

स्वस्ति स्यादपि वैदेह्या राक्षसैर्भक्षणं विना।।3.57.4।।

मनश्च मे दीनमिहाप्रहृष्टं चक्षुश्च सव्यं कुरुते विकारम्। <--- left eye throbbing

असंशयं लक्ष्मण नास्ति सीता हृता मृता वा पथि वर्तते वा।।3.57.24।।

Today 8/26

Rama is not happy that Lakshmana left Seeta alone, in spite of Lakshamana giving all the reasons

सर्वथा त्वविनीतं ते सीतया यत्प्रचोदितः।

क्रोधस्य वशमापन्नो नाकरोश्शासनं मम।।3.59.24।। < -- did not follow my orders

My experiments with body (a twist on Gandhi's My experiments with Truth)

Over the years I have made many lifestyle changes in search of better health and well being both physically and mentally. Here is an attempt to document and share the experiments. My primary intensions of this blog are 1/ Improve my writing skills 2/ Keep my self accountable and track my progress towards the promises I make 3/  I may influence others if they want to learn from it.

This week marks another important step in the series of lifestyle changes. Even though you will notice that I am easily influenced by the latest fad in diet or exercise it will take several years for me to made up my mind and commit to it seriously. One of my relatives passed away last week and though he was in eighties,  diabetes was key contributor for his death. I did not know half of the US population is at risk of metabolic diseases including diabetes, hypertension, cardio vascular diseases, cancer etc, due to the big elephant in the kitchen - SUGAR. There is enough science and evidence today to support that Sugar is one of the main causes for these diseases. I had heard stories on youtube or read about books where people described their experience after quitting sugar. This was always in the back of my mind and this week I am taking a plunge into it.  Here are other lifestyle commitments I have been following:

  • About 6 years back I saw this movie Fat Sick and Nearly Dead and started juicing. I have not stopped since. With the new sugar awareness I will reduce the sweet fruits considerably and increase the use of vegetables. This was always recommended but I just ignored it.
  • Around the same time I also saw a Netflix movie that talked about atrocities done to the cow in the dairy industry, why we don't need milk other than mother's breast milk, and why our body is not made to digest milk. I am a partial vegan, meaning, no more milk or cheese. However, I do take butter milk or plain yogurt in small quantities if I can't get coconut yogurt. Another one is ghee which is hard to give up.
  • About 2 years back I saw several videos of Sadguru, and decided to quit any food that impairs with the functions of the brain, meaning anything that stimulates or makes it numb. Read it as caffeine or alcohol. No more coffee, tea or any soft drinks. I have stayed away from alcohol for a long time.
  • About 3 years back I ran into Millet man of India, Dr. Khadar, and decided to reduce consumption of white rice which is a staple in my diet. I have not completely stopped white rice but use a variety of whole grains including millets, brown and red rice.
What has this done to my body? I don't have any precise metrics to show nor have any great stories that some of the characters in the videos mentioned above or book authors talk about. However, I will write about a few of my observations in the coming episodes.

How is the no sugar diet going? today the only sugar I had was a teaspoon of gulcand along with paan leaves.  I will talk about few more of lifestyle changes in the next episode.

Introduction to Sanatana Dharma Scriptures - Part 1

Vedas: Literally means knowledge. These are the most important texts which are considered Apaurusheya. This literally means "not of a man", the term also means "impersonal, authorless", Vedas were realized by Rishis (saints) in their deep state of meditation. Vedas are also called - Shruti - literally means - "what is heard"

There are 4 vedas - Rigveda, yajurveda, samaveda and atharvana-veda; Vedas are sometimes divided into two parts - Karma-kanda and Gnana-kanda

Rigveda is the most ancient among the four. It has 8 ashtakas and 10 mandalas. Rigveda is in the form of poetry. Rigveda has hymns for many dieties as well as practical advise for the worldly.

Yajurveda has to parts - Krishna yajurveda and shukla yajurveda. Yajurveda has mantras used in yagnas (fire sacrificial offerings and rituals)

Samaveda gives importance to melody and singing. Samaveda mantras are sung like music (sangeeta)

Atharvana veda has a a lot of mantras from Rig veda repeated and also has its own mantras too. Some traditions don't consider Atharvana veda as another veda and hence say there are only 3 vedas.

There are 4 parts in each vedas - Samhita, brahmana, aranyakas and upanishad.
Samhitas are the first part of the vedas. It is a collection of mantras . Hence sometime Samhitas are referred to as mantras too.

Brahmanas are the second part of the vedas. They are mostly in prose format and it has explaination of mantras from Samhitas. Though Brahmanas and Samhitas deal with rituals their literal meaning should not be considered. They are symbolic and have metaphysical meaning. The Rig Veda has two Brahmanas – Aitereya Brahmana and Shankhayana Brahmana.
The Shat-Patha Brahmana of Yajur Veda is the largest of all the Brahmanas of all the Vedas.

The Aranyakas form the third part of the Vedas. However, it should be noted that the Aranyakas are sometimes considered as parts of the Brahmanas. With the advent of the Aranyakas, the emphasis on the sacrificial rites seems to be diluting. The shift towards philosophic and spiritual interpretation of the rituals and ceremonials is evident.

The Upanishads are the concluding portions of the Vedas. The Upanishads are at the end of the Vedas. The Upanishads are referred to as the Vedanta. The word Vedanta is a compound word made up of two Sanskrit words: Veda and Anta. The word anta means an end.

The word Upanishad is derived from the Sanskrit root Sad. The Sanskrit verb sad refers to the knowledge or the satya. The words upa + ni suggests sitting (before someone) with a determination. The word Upanishad can be understood as: To sit near (close to) a guru with an objective to acquire knowledge.

Most of the Upanishads are in forms of dialogues between a master and a disciple Of the 108 Upanishads, ten Upanishads are considered exquisite by distinguished scholars. Some famous veda mantras

  1. Satyam vada dharmam chara सत्यं वद धर्मं चर (tell truth, follow dharma)
  2. Ma gridaha kasya sviddhanam मा गृध: कस्य स्विद्धनं (dont steal others money)
  3. Sham no astu dvipade sham chatushpade शं नो अस्तु द्विपदे शं चतुश्पदे (let peace come to us humans and animals)
There are 6 vedangas required to study and learn more about vedas. They are:
  1. Shiksha: Means learning, lesson. It is study of letters, sound and science of making of language.
  2. Vyakarana: Grammer and linguistic analysis.
  3. Chandas: Prosody and poetic meters. e.g. Most of ramayana and mahabharata are in Anushtup chandas which has 8 letters in each line and 4 such lines.
  4. Nirukta: Etymology and explanation of words.
  5. Jyotisha: Astrology and astronomy. Science of time keeping.
  6. Kalpa: Ritual instructions. E.g. rituals at birth, wedding, death etc.
